I am a global historian of protest, revolution, and human rights, with particular interest in the movements that brought Communism to Poland and Eastern Europe and then brought Communism to its end. This research has expanded into exploration of the era of nonviolent revolutions worldwide from the 1970s. I have also written about the global phenomenon of political imprisonment across different kinds of regimes since the 19th century.
Born and raised in New England, I studied at Harvard, Toronto, and Michigan. I taught at the universities of Colorado, Indiana, and Kentucky, before moving to Poland in 2026.
